Joseph Pizzimenti, OD, FAAO Case Studies in Glaucoma
(1 hour; Category: Glaucoma, COPE 35370-GL) Optometric physicians are faced on a daily basis, with the responsibility of making decisions in the management of their patients who have glaucoma. Some decisions are easily made while others present a significant challenge. This course provides a survey of new knowledge and recent developments in the area of glaucoma pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management. Covered topics include neuroprotection, angle-closure glaucoma, normal tension glaucoma, first-line drug therapies, laser and surgical developments, and new technology.
Low Vision Rehabilitation
(1 hour; Category: Low Vision, COPE 29560-LV) The goal of this presentation is to review the optometrist’s role in providing low vision services for patients that are living with retinal disease.
Essentials in Posterior Segment Disease
(2 hours, optional exam available; Category: Treatment/Management Posterior Segment, COPE 34049-PS) This course uses clinical cases and topical discussion to present contemporary issues in the diagnosis and treatment/management of posterior segment disease. After a brief review of relevant functional anatomy, the lecturers describe current standards of care within the context of clinical case scenarios. Audience participation is encouraged.
Sherrol Reynolds, OD, FAAO Hematological Disorders and the Eye
(2 hours, optional exam available; Category: Systemic/Ocular Disease, COPE pending) Hematological disorders encompass a wide spectrum of conditions that can present with ocular involvement. In most patients, the ocular changes may be the initial indication of underlying disease. This presentation will use various cases to discuss findings of anemia, sickle cell, lymphoma and leukemia as well as the latest management and treatment options.
The Spectrum of Retinal Vascular Anomalies
(2 hours, optional exam available; Category: Treatment/Management Posterior Segment, COPE 35346-PS) Current understanding of anomalous retinal vessels may be challenging as these vessels may represent a spectrum of diseases. Understanding the pathophysiology is important in both diagnosis and management. This presentation discusses the evolution of CNV, variants such as PCV, RAP, collateral vessels and primary retinal telangiectasia.
Controversies in Nutrition (presented jointly with Dr. Pizzimenti)
(2 hours; Category: General Optometry, COPE 34585-GO) Society is bombarded with messages about food and nutrition. These messages often conflict with one another. There are a number of nutraceuticals that claim to offer significant systemic and ocular health benefits. Yet there are some potential side-effects that impact the clinical use of a number of these products. This course provides science-based information to help the attendee address common controversies in nutrition.
Clifford Brooks III, MD, Fellow, American Board of Ophthalmology Patient-Centered Cataract Surgery Co-Management
(2 hours; Category: Peri-Operative Management of Ophthalmic Surgery, COPE pending) This course will present a patient-centered approach to cataract surgery co-management with discussion of ethical considerations, co-manager roles, preoperative considerations (including patient selection, coexisting pathology and expectation management strategies), and a typical post-operative care regimen.
