Joseph Pizzimenti, OD, FAAO
Case Studies in Glaucoma

Optometric physicians are faced on a daily basis, with the responsibility of making decisions in the management of their patients who have glaucoma. Some decisions are easily made while others present a significant challenge. This course provides a survey of new knowledge and recent developments in the area of glaucoma pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management. Covered topics include neuroprotection, angle-closure glaucoma, normal tension glaucoma, first-line drug therapies, laser and surgical developments, and new technology.
Low Vision Rehabilitation
(1 hour; Category: Low Vision, COPE 29560-LV)
The goal of this presentation is to review the optometrist’s role in providing low vision services for patients that are living with retinal disease.
Essentials in Posterior Segment Disease
(2 hours, optional exam available; Category: Treatment/Management Posterior Segment, COPE 34049-PS)
This course uses clinical cases and topical discussion to present contemporary issues in the diagnosis and treatment/management of posterior segment disease. After a brief review of relevant functional anatomy, the lecturers describe current standards of care within the context of clinical case scenarios. Audience participation is encouraged.
Picture of Dr. Pizzimenti Dr. Pizzimenti is an Associate Professor at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) College of Optometry. He is an internationally recognized speaker on Ocular Disease, Low Vision Rehabilitation, and Primary Care Optometry. Dr. Pizzimenti has completed funded clinical research in the areas of diabetes, age-related macular degeneration, and low vision. Dr. Pizzimenti’s scientific articles and have appeared in Optometry and Vision Science, Pharmacotherapy, Optometry: Journal of the American Optometric Association, Optometric Education, The Diabetes Educator, Eye Care Review, The Internet Journal of Allied Health Science and Practice, Review of Optometry, Clinical and Experimental Optometry, and Sleep Medicine. Dr. Pizzimenti recently co-authored a chapter on Diabetic Retinopathy in the textbook entitled Diabetes in Black America: Public Health and Clinical Solutions to a National Crisis. Dr. Pizzimenti co-authors the popular Review of Systems column in Review of Optometry. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and Fellow of the Optometric Retina Society. Dr. Pizzimenti resides in Boca Raton, FL, with his wife, Dr. Claire Pizzimenti, and their three children.
 
Sherrol Reynolds, OD, FAAO
Hematological Disorders and the Eye

Hematological disorders encompass a wide spectrum of conditions that can present with ocular involvement. In most patients, the ocular changes may be the initial indication of underlying disease. This presentation will use various cases to discuss findings of anemia, sickle cell, lymphoma and leukemia as well as the latest management and treatment options.
The Spectrum of Retinal Vascular Anomalies
(2 hours, optional exam available; Category: Treatment/Management Posterior Segment, COPE 35346-PS)
Current understanding of anomalous retinal vessels may be challenging as these vessels may represent a spectrum of diseases. Understanding the pathophysiology is important in both diagnosis and management. This presentation discusses the evolution of CNV, variants such as PCV, RAP, collateral vessels and primary retinal telangiectasia.
Controversies in Nutrition (presented jointly with Dr. Pizzimenti)

Society is bombarded with messages about food and nutrition. These messages often conflict with one another. There are a number of nutraceuticals that claim to offer significant systemic and ocular health benefits. Yet there are some potential side-effects that impact the clinical use of a number of these products. This course provides science-based information to help the attendee address common controversies in nutrition.
Picture of Dr. Reynolds Dr. Sherrol Reynolds received her Bachelor of Science from University of Florida and her Doctor of Optometry from Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in 1996. Following graduation, she completed a one-year residency and went into private practice in Coral Springs Florida. She later joined the faculty at Nova Southeastern University where she currently holds the rank of Associate Professor. She has served as a clinic chief, module director, and course instructor. She is also a clinical attending in the diabetes and macular clinic as well as a residency supervisor. Dr. Reynolds is a member of the local, state, and national optometric associations. She is a Fellow in the American Academy of Optometry and the Optometric Retinal Society. She has participated in various research projects and authored numerous posters and publications on various topics in ocular and systemic disease. She has also lectured on a local and national level.
 
Clifford Brooks III, MD, Fellow, American Board of Ophthalmology
Patient-Centered Cataract Surgery Co-Management
(2 hours; Category: Peri-Operative Management of Ophthalmic Surgery, COPE pending)
This course will present a patient-centered approach to cataract surgery co-management with discussion of ethical considerations, co-manager roles, preoperative considerations (including patient selection, coexisting pathology and expectation management strategies), and a typical post-operative care regimen.
Picture of Dr. Brooks Dr. Clifford Brooks III was born and raised in Bloomington, IN. He studied at Indiana University receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry with highest honors in 2002. He then attended Indiana University School of Medicine on full scholarship from the U.S. Military’s Health Professions Scholarship Program, graduating in 2006. He went on to complete a transitional year internship followed by Ophthalmology Residency at Wilford Hall Medical Center and Brooke Army Medical Center where he served as chief resident. He is currently serving in the United States Air Force stationed at Eglin AFB near Destin, Florida since 2010. He is blessed with a lovely wife, Jennifer, and two beautiful daughters, Ali and Emma.
